Math 2406: Abstract Vector Spaces

Lecture 26 Plan  (Thursday, November 29, 2007).

Apostol 7.8-7.11.

In this lecture we discuss proporties of unitary matrices, which we introduced last time when we diagonalized a Hermitian matrix. Unitary matrices have an orthonormal set of vectors in the rows and columns. Then we'll introduce quadratic forms, which are important in finding the minima of functions of many variables. This comes up in economics and physics.

Final Exam:  Wednesday, December 12, 11:30 a.m. - 2:20 p.m.

The Final exam will cover the sections covered by the Test 1, Quiz 1, and Test 2, plus the material presented in lecture through Tuesday 12/4.  Recommended studying procedures: Review all the problems handed out for practice for the past exams, and complete the practice problems below.

HW 10: Study Problems for the Final Exam.
HW Team 10: submit solution set for the numbered problems below as a computer file by Thursday, December 6.
Everyone else: do not hand in; instead, use as review to study for the exam. Bring questions to office hours next week.
