MATH & DMTH Degree Petition Instructions NEW FOR 2007

Degree Petitions are due at the Registrar's Office
Fall 2007 Graduation - July 11, 2007
Spring 2008 Graduation - October 24, 2007
Summer 2008 Graduation - March 12, 2008
Fall 2008 Graduation - July 2, 2008 (tentative)
Spring 2009 Graduation - October 23, 2008 (tentative)
Summer 2009 Graduation - March 11, 2009 (tentative)

  1. Obtain forms:  Degree Petition, department checklist, and survey

    1. Degree petitions are available online at http://www.registrar.gatech.edu/docs/pdf/UGRAD_PETITION_FOR_DEGREE.pdf

    2. MATH, DMTH, MATH Business Option, DMTH Business Option forms are available online at http://www.math.gatech.edu/academic/undergraduate/degreePrograms/deg_chklist.php .  The forms are also available outside Skiles 218C.
    3. Exit survey forms are available outside of Skiles 218C
  1. Fill out Sections 1 - 5 of the Degree Petition

    1. Follow petition instructions listed on first page of downloaded form.

    2. Make sure all sections of the degree petition are legible.

    3. Catalog Year - You must fill in the catalog year that was in force while you were a GT student.  The catalog year determines the graduation requirements you must satisfy.  In most cases for math degrees, year of grauation iis satisfactory. 
    4. Major School - The Major School is MATH and the Major is MATH or DMTH.
    5. Section 3 - Schedule Information
      1. Present Schedule - List the classes you are currently taking which are needed for graduation.

        1. An example would be Course (MATH), Number (4318) and Hours (3).  

      2. Final Schedule -

        1. Fill in the classes needed for graduation that you will take your final semester at GT.

          1. Humanities electives should be listed as HUM Elec. (For example, HUM 1XXX 3 hrs)

          2. Social science electives should be listed as SS Elec.

          3. MATH 3XXX electives, Sci/Eng electives, or Technical electives should be listed by courses number.  If you don't know which 4000 level math elective class you will take, you may list MATH 4XXX 3 hrs. 

        2. Fill in any transfer credit classes which are still pending. Put a TC after them to indicate that they are transfer credit.

        3. Course Substitutions - Do NOT fill in the Course Substitutions.  Consult with the School of Math first.

    6. Section 4 - Fee Payment / Signatures

      1. Make sure you sign and date the form.

  1. Pay the Degree Petition Fee

    1. Go to the Bursar's Office in Lyman Hall and pay $25 degree petition fee.

    2. The Bursar's office will stamp your degree petition after the degree petition fee is paid.

  1. Obtain Co-Op Signature (Only if you are a Co-op Student)

  1. Fill out Minor/Certificate Form (Only if you have completed the requirements for a minor/certificate)

    1. Minors

      1. If you have a minor, fill out the form. The form for each department is different so please check with the minor department for details.

      2. Have the minor department sign the form.

    2. Certificates - Certificates forms are not turned in with the degree petitions. Those are turned in directly to the department offering the certificate.

    3. Second Major - Two separate degree petitions must be turned in, one to each department.

  1. Print and Review CAPP Report and Complete School of Mathematics Checklist

    1. Complete a Degree Candidate Checklists for the School of Mathematics.  See item 1. Obtain forms for online access to forms.

    2. Print out the CAPP report.

      1. Go to  https://oscar.gatech.edu.

      2. Select  Secured Access Login  Student Services and Financial Aid  >  Student Records  >  CAPP - Advisement and Degree Audit.

      3. Choose the graduation term and press  Generate New Evaluation.  The term should agree with the catalog year in 2.3.iii.

      4. Choose the Program and press  Generate Request.

      5. Choose  Detailed Requirements, the  Printer Friendly Version box and then press  Submit.

      6. Print your CAPP report.

      7. Do NOT staple your CAPP papers.

    3. Review the CAPP report.

    4. If there are any substitutions or things that do not correctly fill in on your CAPP report, please do the following:

      1. Note any substitutions on a post-it on your CAPP report. Please, do not write substitutions directly on your CAPP report or your degree petition.

      2. Use the directions to print your CAPP report but also print out and attach the Additional Information report from step v in the Print out the CAPP report section.

      3. Note that the CAPP report for students pursuing the Business Option may list "Not Met" for Engineering Schience Electives (MATH) and may list "Not Met" for Techinical Elective (DMTH).  The Business Option in not incorporated into CAPPs at this time.
  1. Turn in your Degree Petition, Checklist, CAPP Report , Exit Survey, and Minor Form (if applicable) to the Undergraduate Advisor (Steinbart, Skiles 218C)

    1. We will not accept the degree petition until of the following are completed:

      1. The CAPP report is attached. (Do not staple the CAPP report.)

      2. The degree petition is signed by student.

      3. The co-op, GTREP, and/or International Plan signatures are present (oif appropriate).

      4. The Minor Form is attached (only if minor is completed).

      5. The completed exit survey is included.

      6. The Degree Candidate Checklist for the School of Mathematics is included.
    2. If there are any problems, we will e-mail you as soon as we find the problem.

  1. Pick up your Degree Petition from School of Mathematics and deliver the Degree Petition to Registrar

    1. The academic advisor will review your degree petition and sign as required.

    2. You will receive an e-mail telling you if we found any problems on your degree petition and that your copy is available to be picked up.

    3. Please pick up your degree petition.

    4. Turn in degree petition and minor form (if applicable) to Registrar's office before close of business of the date listed at top of page.

  1. Verify Degree Petition Status

    1. Before the start of your graduating semester, verify that your degree petition status is OK through the Web Student Access System.

      1. Go to  https://oscar.gatech.edu.

      2. Select  Secured Access Login > Student Services and Financial Aid > Student Records > View Degree Candidate Information.
