The Master of Science in Mathematics

The School of Mathematics provides opportunities for study in a wide range of mathematical disciplines, and the Master of Science in Mathematics is meant to provide a rigorous introduction to graduate level Mathematics. Our MS program is aiming chiefly at students who will continue to a PhD in Mathematics, but who want to strengthen their Mathematical background prior to entering doctoral studies. At the same time, several doctoral students in other departments at Georgia Tech, who have the need for advanced Mathematical training, find our program of interest and end up earning a MS degree in Mathematics as a secondary degree.

The degree can be completed in 3 Semesters (or 2, working hard), and students can choose among one of the several graduate sequences we offer, including Algebra, Analysis, Ordinary and Partia Differential Equations, Geometry, Probability, as well as several other courses in Numerical Analysis and Statistics.

Curricular Requirements

Students must complete 30 semester credit hours, of which at least 21 have to be at the graduate level. Of these, up to 9 hours can be thesis hours.

All students must abide by the general rules of Masters students at Georgia Tech. See program of study and requirements for award of MS degree.

On top of the regulations above, in the School of Mathematics we require some other specific coursework. For students who enrolled in the MS-Math program prior to the Fall Semeseter, 2008, the requirements are those at here. For students who enrolled in the MS-Math program since Fall 2008 the requirements are as follows.

A program of study leading to a master's degree in mathematics consists of 30 credit hours and must include at least 12 hours at the 6000-level or above in Mathematics, with courses in at least three different fields of Mathematics:

  1. At least two classes from a concentration in Analysis.
    1. --Analysis: MATH 6321, 6337, 6338, 6580, 7334, 7337, 7338.
      • One of these two classes must be MATH 6337 or 6338.
  2. At least one class in two of the following areas.
    1. --Discrete Mathematics and Algebra: MATH 6014, 6121, 6122, 7016, 7018.
    2. --Geometry and Topology: MATH 6441, 6442, 6455, 6456, 6457, 6458.
    3. --Differential Equations: MATH 6307, 6308, 6341, 6342.
    4. --Probability and Mathematical Statistics: MATH 6241, 6242, 7244, 7245, 6262, 6263, 6266, 6267.
    5. --Numerical Analysis: MATH 6640, 6643, 6644, 6645, 6646.
Classes taken to satisfy criteria (I) and (II) must be passed with a grade of B or better.

The remaining eighteen hours required may be taken under either a thesis or a non-thesis option. Under the thesis option, the program must include a thesis (up to nine thesis hours) and additional hours of coursework at the 4000 level or higher. Under the non-thesis option, the program must include a total of eighteen hours of coursework at the 6000-level or higher in Mathematics, with a grade of B or better, and the remaining twelve hours are free electives. Under either of these options, MATH 6701 and 6702, as well as all courses required by number for the Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics or Discrete Mathematics (MATH 3012, 3215, 4107, 4317, 4318, 4320, and 4640), do not carry degree credit for graduate mathematics majors, and may not be used to fulfill these degree requirements.

Students must maintain an overall grade point average of at least 2.7 and receive a grade of C or better in each mathematics course in the program of study.

If a MS student chooses to write a thesis, then there will be a thesis defense consisting of a presentation of the thesis followed by questions related to the thesis. There will be a committee consisting of three or more members chosen by the Committee Chair, ordinarily the advisor of the thesis, in consultation with the Graduate Coordinator. The thesis defense must take place at least two weeks before commencement. The student must reserve a room for two hours. The Committee reports the result of the exam to the Graduate Coordinator and to the Vice Provost. The thesis is archived electronically. Please refer to Thesis guide for instructions on MS thesis.
