Research Experience for Undergraduates

2008 Research Experience for Undergraduates -- Poster

Research Opportunities

Announcing Georgia Tech's Summer 2008 Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program

Students who are accepted to the REU Program will be paid a summer stipend of approximately $3600 to conduct mathematical research for 8 weeks under the supervision of a professor. The time period for most projects will be the long summer session, but this can be negotiated with the supervising professor.

If you are interested in participating in a Mathematics REU this summer, please send an application to Professor Matthew Baker (mbaker@math.gatech.edu) by WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12.

An application consists of:
  • A short (up to one page) personal statement explaining your interest in the REU program and any relevant experience you might have.
  • A current transcript (unofficial is OK).
  • A list of math courses which you have taken (including courses you are currently enrolled in).
  • The name of a Georgia Tech mathematics professor who we may contact as a reference, OR a letter of reference from a mathematics professor outside Georgia Tech.
Additional information on the REU program

MENTORS: If there is a particular professor that you would like to work with, you are strongly encouraged to contact him/her directly. Students who have identified a faculty mentor who has already agreed to supervise them will be given priority during the selection process.

ELIGIBILITY: All undergraduates (Georgia Tech or otherwise) who are US citizens or permanent residents are eligible to receive NSF funding for the REU program. If you don't meet these criteria, there may be other means of being funded. Concurrent enrollment in one summer school course is OK, but enrollment in two or more courses is not permitted.

REQUIREMENTS: At the end of the REU, students will be required to provide both written and oral reports on their work.

SUMMER 2008 REU PROJECTS

Potential topics for Summer 2008 REUs (not a complete list):
Silas Alben:
  1. A differential equation used for constructing mechanical fish fins.
  2. Self-assembly of polyhedra from flat sheets.
  3. The shapes assumed by elastic rods under confining forces in three dimensions.
Matt Baker:
  1. Brill-Noether theory for graphs
  2. Green's functions for Mandelbrot-like sets
Doron Lubinsky:
  1. Biorthogonal polynomials
  2. Problems on q-series and q-Pochhammer symbols
Yuri Bakhtin:
  1. Directed polymers in random environment
  2. Random solutions of the Burgers equation
