Georgia Tech REU
Other Funding Sources
Other sources of funding for GT REUs in mathematics have broader eligibility
conditions. They come in two sources, one is
work--study money, and the other comes from funds from the College of
Science.
Work-Study Funds
The Federal Work study program will pay 75% of any students salary that is
work/study eligible up to a maximum of about
$1200/semester The guidelines for setting up students under this program is
at GT's Financial Aid Office:
To apply for these funds, follow these steps.
1. The faculty member/school must write a short description of the job and
post it on www.monstertrax.com under GT listings.
Most departments already have work/study students doing clerical work and
have a listing at www.monstertrax.com for
"Student Assistant". These are usually general enough so that the financial
people involved can just "activate"
the job listing and use the number associated with the job to get the
student
on the payroll. They should also know how to check the correct boxes in the
student's PSF so that GT payroll
will automatically route 75% out of Financial Aid. See the current listings
for these jobs.
2. The pay scale is up to the faculty member or school. The going rates at
GT and around the country are $7-$8/hour
for student doing skilled undergraduate research. GT-federal work/study has
a tutorial program through CEISMC that send
students out to local schools for tutoring and is paying $10/hr for that
work.
College of Science Research Funds
President's Undergraduate Research Awards The College of Sciences (COS) is
competitively funding requests by students/faculty for funds to
be used in undergraduate research. These research awards will be in the form
of scholarships for summer research for sophomore and junior
COS students. COS majors who have greater than 45 hours but less than 90
hours and have arranged to undertake research with a College of
Sciences faculty member are encouraged to apply.
The student will work at least 18 hours/week and register for 6 hours of
Special Problems in a COS school. The College expects to award up to 20
scholarships of $1500 for the summer semester of 2002.
The application consists of a completed coversheet and research proposal (3
page maximum). The research proposal should be written by the student in
consultation with the faculty member and should state the objectives of the
project and a brief description of the research procedures to be used. The
deadline for application (three copies) is 5 pm Friday, April 5, 2002.
