MATH 1512 Information

Math 1512, Honors Calculus II

Fall 2011

The School of Mathematics offers MATH 1512, Honors Calculus II, which may be taken by incoming qualified freshmen in place of MATH 1502, Calculus II.  MATH 1512 is designed for students who have an exceptional interest in mathematics and a demonstrated competence in its formal study.  The topics and the schedule of MATH 1512 parallel those in MATH 1502. However, MATH 1512 offers a more proof-oriented, thorough theoretical development of the calculus and differential equations.  Note that MATH 1512 is more difficult than the typical high school “honors” course.  Both regular and honors courses show the power and usefulness of mathematics through the treatment of applications.  The MATH 1512 section for students not in the honors program is limited to 50 students.  For more information about other honors courses, visit the honors mathematics page.

AP (College Board) scores which earn exemptions from Calculus I, MATH 1501, (4 hours AP credit given) are AB 4-5 and BC 3-5, but only students with BC 5 will receive invitations to apply for Honors Calculus II.

APPLYING FOR THE HONORS CALCULUS II COURSE DOES NOT GUARANTEE ADMISSION.  We will e-mail all applicants the selection committee’s decision at the official GT e-mail addresses and non-GT e-mail addresses (if provided) by 3:00 PM on August 16.

IF YOU ARE SELECTED TO BE IN THE HONORS CALCULUS II CLASS, and you wish to enroll in the class, you must register for the section for which you are assigned by 3:00 PM on August 24.  If you fail to register for the section by the deadline or attend your honors class by August 24, your space may be offered to another student on the waiting list.  Note:  Remember to drop MATH 1502 from your schedule when you register for MATH 1512.

IF YOU ARE NOT SELECTED TO BE IN THE HONORS CALCULUS II CLASS, you should attend the regular calculus class for which you are registered.  A waiting list for Math 1512 will be maintained through August 26.  Note:  If you do not register for any calculus class and are not accepted into the honors class, you will then be left without a calculus class.
