Permits and Overloads

Course Overload and Permit Instructions and Guidelines for Spring 2010:

CONTINUING STUDENTS:  You will be able to submit your requests during Phase I, from October 28 to November 18.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

  • Overloads, permits, and prerequisite overrides for mathematics classes must be requested online at the OSCAR registration override request system.
  • We DO NOT accept walk-in, telephone, or e-mail overload, permit, and prerequisite requests.
  • An auto-generated message will be sent to your GT account when your request is processed.
  • Do not contact instructors and staff. They will not be able to assist you with permit issues.

WE ISSUE THREE TYPES OF PERMITS:

  • Closed class overload: for a student who seeks to register for a math class that is closed.
  • Prerequisite override: for a student who has not had the proper prerequisite/corequisite for a math class.
  • Restricted class permit: for a student who cannot register for a math class because of a major restriction or a class restriction.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION :

  • We have not finalized teaching assignments for instructors in MATH 1501, 1502, 1512, 1522, 1711, 1712, 2401, 2403, 2602, 2605, 3012, 3215, 3770. The instructors' names will be posted a few days before the semester begins.
  • We recommend that students register for core required mathematics, English, lab sciences, computer science and major specific classes during Phase I. Unfortunately we may not be able to accommodate individual schedule preferences. The School of Mathematics will not accept overload requests for a 1000-3000 level course until ALL sections of a particular course are closed.
  • Submitting a request does not guarantee that you will be granted the permit.
  • Each type of permit is processed independent of the others. You may need to submit more than one type of request for a class.
  • An auto-generated message will be sent to your GT account when your request is processed. You can also check your request status on OSCAR. A typical processing time for a prerequisite or permit request is three workdays. All requests will be processed by noon on the last day of each registration period.
  • A student cannot attend class without being enrolled in it. If you have received a permit, you must add the section to your schedule to be enrolled in it.
  • We can only accept overload requests for particular meeting times. We do not accept overload requests for particular instructors. If space is available in another section that meets at the same time as the requested section, you may be granted an overload permit for the other section.
  • An undergraduate student cannot take more than one core math course during the same term. The core courses are 1501, 1502, 1512, 1522, 1711, 1712, 2401, 2403, 2602 and 2605.
  • MATH 1502 SB1, SB2 are for biology majors only. We do not accept permit override requests for these sections.
  • Section HP is for Honors Program students only.
  • Section RCH is for Study Abroad students in the Summer Shanghai program only.
  • Sections Q, Q1 and RCC are video sections. Main-campus students cannot register for these video sections.
  • Most 4000 level courses are divided into graduate and undergraduate sections. The section for graduate students ends with a "G", and the section for undergraduate students ends with a "U". A graduate student does not need a prerequisite override for a 4000 level section that ends with a "G". A graduate student cannot register for a 4000 level section that ends with a "U". An undergraduate student cannot register for a 4000 level section that ends with a "G".
  • We do not keep a waitlist from Phase I. If your overload request is denied in Phase I and you still need an overload for the same section, you will have to resubmit your request during the Phase II of registration.
  • See also the registration information page at the Registrar's site
  • If you still have questions, email the Math Permit Team.
