The School has a very sizable teaching load, and each semester it hires 30-45 undergraduates to TA for its courses. This is a paying job, and can frequently be a very rewarding experience.
Undergraduate TA positions are only open to undergraduate students.
Fall 2012 Undergraduate Teaching Assistant Positions
The School of Mathematics is looking for responsible undergraduate students to join our undergraduate teaching assistant (UTA) team this fall. The minimum requirements for TA applicants are: completion of mathematics courses through at least Calculus III (Math 2401 or 2605), a high overall GPA with grades of all A's and B's (preferably A's) in mathematics courses, and excellent people and communication skills. Most spring UTAs are selected from the fall UTA team, but there are sometimes a few positions for new UTAs during the spring term. If you wish to teach in the Spring 2013 term but are unable to teach in the Fall of 2012, please check this site in mid-October for information about available positions, if applicable.
An undergraduate teaching assistant (UTA) has many responsibilities.
- Teaching two 50-minute recitation sessions each week.
- Grading homework, quiz/exam papers, and projects (including proctoring and grading during the final exams week) for the lead instructor.
- Holding office hours (at least one hour per week).
- Attending organizational meetings with the lead instructor.
- Attending the CETL/Mathematics TA Orientation (tentatively scheduled on Sunday afternoon, August 19).
- Enrolling in CETL 2000 MAT, TA Development Seminar (11:05 am -11:55 am on Tuesdays during the semester).
The stipend for the 2012-2013 academic year will be approximately $1,490 per semester.
Upon a satisfactory completion of the UTA duties, a UTA will receive one credit hour (P/F) of CETL 2000 MAT.
