Pi Mu Epsilon, the School of Mathematics, and the College of Sciences are proud to announce a revival of the Georgia Tech High School Mathematics Competition (GT-HSMC). The competition was started at Georgia Tech by the Georgia Tech Mathematics Club in 1958, when nearly 700 students competed for a top prize of a portable television set. If you are interested in the origins of the HSMC, our history page contains correspondence and other information about the HSMC.

The 2009 competition will be held on Saturday, 28 February 2009, on the Georgia Tech campus in Atlanta, Georgia. As a brief overview, the HSMC is open to all high school students, with parallel tracks for Junior-Varsity (9th and 10th grades) and Varsity (11th and 12th grades) competitors. A one-hour multiple-choice test will be used to choose semi-finalists and finalists, who will later take a written examination that emphasizes the logical steps of proof-based solution in addition to problem solving. Overall winners of the competition will receive Georgia Tech scholarships up to $2500. A team ciphering competition (contributing only to team individual scores and ciphering awards but not semi-finalist or finalist status) will also be held.

Along with the competition, all competitors will have lunch provided (teachers/parents in attendance will also have lunch provided) and receive a guided tour of the Georgia Tech campus. Besides the scholarships and trophies awarded to the top scorers, each competitor will receive an HSMC T-shirt. Pi Mu Epsilon has announced a minimum of $10,000 in scholarships (thanks in a large part to a generous donation by Invesco).
