Georgia Tech has a long tradition of training students in engineering and science. Founded in 1885, it has grown to a current enrollment of about 15,000, including approximately 3,500 graduate students, in the Colleges of Engineering, Architecture, Sciences, Computing, and Management, and in the Ivan Allen College.

The School of Mathematics, a unit of Georgia Tech's College of Sciences, is among the nation's top public university Mathematics departments. It has 52 full-time faculty members, and, as a rule, several visiting professors from other universities in the US and abroad. There are currently 65 graduate students in the M.S. and Ph.D. programs, nearly all of whom are fully supported through fellowships or teaching assistantships. The Master of Science in Applied Mathematics has been offered since 1952, and the doctoral program was begun in 1963. To date the School has awarded approximately 400 masters degrees and 121 doctoral degrees. Georgia Tech enjoys a strong reputation in science and engineering and her graduates are in demand by industry and academia.

The School of Mathematics is committed to extensive support of its computing facilities with plentiful modern equipment and cutting edge software. It has a large and still growing network of file servers and work stations, maintained by a full-time system administrator and additional support personnel. Most graduate student offices are equipped with computers, and all graduate students have computer accounts and access to the School's extensive Sun and Linux laboratories, with direct connection to the Internet and the World Wide Web.

The Georgia Tech Library and Information Center, which is located next to the School of Mathematics, has an unusually complete set of scientific and engineering resources, including more than 51,000 mathematics books and over 400 mathematics journal subscriptions. The Library's general collection contains over three million catalogued volumes and more than 2.5 million uncatalogued microtexts. The Library is a depository for the Government Printing and the Patent and Trademark Offices. Online access to library catalogs, indices, directories, class reserves, articles and encyclopedias in 186 databases (including full-text sources) is available campus-wide and remotely. The Georgia Tech Library was one of the first university libraries to subscribe to MathSciNet, the American Mathematical Society's searchable data base.

THE CAMPUS AND THE CITY

Atlanta is an international hub of transportation and at the same time an unusual blend of beautiful homes, dense stands of trees and modern hotels and office buildings. The city provides the Tech community with a wide spectrum of activities. Turner Field is home to the Atlanta Braves and the Georgia Dome is home to the Falcons, while the Philips Arena hosts the Hawks and the Thrashers. Atlanta was the site of the 1996 Olympic Games, and the Institute benefits from the extensive facilities and housing constructed on campus for the Games. The Robert W. Woodruff Arts Center, near Georgia Tech, houses the Alliance Theatre, the Children's Theatre and the High Museum of Art and is the home of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. There are many community theater groups, including Drama Tech on campus, and a number of community musical groups. Atlanta has some 30 degree-granting colleges, universities and junior colleges. Other nearby institutions are Emory University, Georgia State University, Clark Atlanta University, and Spelman, Morehouse, and Agnes Scott Colleges.

The 300 acre campus of Georgia Tech is located just north of downtown Atlanta. A graduate living center provides modern well-equipped suites, and affordable private housing exists within walking distance. A good public transportation system provides access to almost all parts of the city, including outlying apartment complexes. Numerous extracurricular activities are available on the Georgia Tech campus. The Student Center provides a range of programs from concerts to crafts, and Tech's Center for the Arts hosts performing artists of international reputation. An intramural athletic complex includes facilities for such activities as basketball, tennis, volleyball, weight training, gymnastics, racquet ball, squash and swimming. The lakes, mountains and rivers are used by students for sailing, hiking, spelunking and white-water canoeing. A moderate climate ensures that many sports are enjoyed year-round.
