Nancy Hefer Bates (1930-2007), Habersham County

Born in Miami, Florida January 5, 1930, she was the daughter of the late James H. and Ruby Carmichael Hefner. She was a teacher and began her career in Habersham County in 1966, and enjoyed 19 years of dedicated service to Habersham County High School. She received numerous awards, including Teacher of the Year, STAR teacher, and was recognized in the Habersham County Teachers Hall of Fame. Mrs. Bates was a member of the Cornelia First Presbyterian Church where she served as Elder and Clerk of the Session. She was also a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, the Georgia and National Council Math Teachers Association; the Retired Teachers of Georgia Association, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Bates was instrumental in the founding of the Habersham Christian Learning Center. Mrs. Bates died Friday, November 2, 2007, at a private healthcare facility following a brief illness.
