Georgia Institute of Technology

Each year in the spring The School of Mathematics hosts the Georgia Tech High School Mathematics Competition.  The competition covers a wide range of high school math topics, from algebra I up to basic calculus.  Schools from any state are welcome to compete.

Format

The tournament consists of three tests: Multiple choice, ciphering, and a proof-based exam.  All questions will be over a range of high school level material, and all students take the same test regardless of division or grade. The student works independently at all portions of the tournament.
  - Multiple Choice will be a 90 minute exam consisting of 30 questions.  
  - Ciphering is a set of 10 questions, done one at a time, with 3 minutes per question.  
  - The top ~40 students in each division (see below) take the proof-based exam.  This test consists of at least five proof questions

Divisions

Varsity consists of grades 11 and 12.  Junior Varsity consists of 9th and 10th.  At this time we will allow middle schoolers to compete but they must register in the junior varsity division.  Each school can bring at most four teams per division with at most five members per team.

Awards

The top 5 teams and top 10 individuals in each division are awarded trophies.
 - The team score is calculated by adding the best 4 out of five MC scores and the best four out of five ciphering scores.  
 - Individual winners are based only on proof exam.  Qualification for the proof exam is based only on the score on the multiple choice portion.  The top 10 individuals in each division are awarded.  The top three varsity scores will also receive scholarships to Georgia Tech.
