Pi Mu Epsilon, the School of Mathematics, and the College of Sciences are proud to announce a revival of the Georgia Tech High School Mathematics Competition (GT-HSMC). The competition was started at Georgia Tech by the Georgia Tech Mathematics Club in 1958, when nearly 700 students competed for a top prize of a portable television set.
The 2010 competition will be held on Saturday, 27 February 2010, on the Georgia Tech campus in Atlanta, Georgia. As a brief overview, the HSMC is open to all high school students, with parallel tracks for Junior-Varsity (9th and 10th grades) and Varsity (11th and 12th grades) competitors. A ninety-minute multiple-choice test will be used to choose semi-finalists and finalists, who will later take a written examination that emphasizes the logical steps of proof-based solution in addition to problem solving. Scholarships will be given out in each division. A team ciphering competition (contributing only to team individual scores and ciphering awards but not semi-finalist or finalist status) will also be held.
