Fellowships for Masters and PhD in Mathematics at Georgia Tech

The School of Mathematics at the Georgia Institute of Technology will offer eight fellowships split between incoming Masters and PhD students for the Fall of 2012, 2013 and 2014. These NSF funded fellowships are designed to help train a diverse highly skilled domestic workforce.

To be eligible for the fellowship an applicant must

  • be US citizen or permanent resident and
  • demonstrate financial need (according to Federal standards).

All applicants for a Masters or PhD program in the School of Mathematics, who meet the above eligibility requirements, will be considered for a S-STEM Fellowship. There is no additional application necessary. We would especially like to encourage people from underrepresented groups in mathematics to apply for admission to a Masters or PhD program and hence for a S-STEM Fellowship too.

S-STEM fellowships are for two years, but subject to the Fellow's satisfactory performance in the program. All Fellows will receive the following benefits.

  • A $1,000 per month stipend during the 9 month academic year.
  • An opportunity for a TA position if the Fellow so chooses. The TA position will be at a reduced workload from standard TA positions during the fellowship and it will entail a tuition waiver.
  • A $1,000 travel allowance to attend conferences and professional meetings.
  • Mentoring from a faculty member and another graduate student.
  • Monthly Fellows lunches to discuss progress, frustrations, career plans, share experience in applying for doctoral work or for jobs.
  • Eligibility to be considered for the S-STEM Fellows Award, offered each year to the most meritorious Fellow.

Fellows will also have the following opportunities.

  • Act as ambassadors of our program to colleges in the Atlanta area.
  • Receive credit for attending the Research Horizons Seminar. This is a seminar in which faculty present advanced research topics to graduate students. Fellows will be able to sign up for Math 8900 and receive credit for attending the seminars by writing a report on each seminar.
  • Give talks to other Fellows and, more generally, other graduate students about their research or experience in the program.

S-STEM Fellows in a Masters program will have the following additional benefit.

  • Fellows can enroll the summer before the first year of support and receive support as a TA. This will allow the Fellow to take advanced undergraduate courses and help prepare for more advanced courses in the following Fall.

All fellowships are funded by a "Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics" National Science Foundation grant.
