Tentative Curves for Belinfante's Math 3215 Exams

Spring 2008

The class average and standard deviation are not the sole basis for computing course grades. They are provided as a guide for you to determine how well you did relative to the rest of the class.

Generally speaking, a grade more than one standard deviation below average should be regarded as failing. To be sure of getting an A, strive to have your average grade on the exams to be one standard deviation above the class average.

Exam policies

A good way to prepare for the exams is to practice on old exams. Some exams in this course are open book because students may need to use the tables in the back of the book. Other notes are not permitted. Any type of calculator may be used on the exams, but one must still document the solution indicating what formulas were used to do the calculations. Unsupported answers will not receive full credit.

The Academic Honor Code will be enforced. Cell phones and earphones are not permitted.

If an exam is missed on account of illness or another valid reason, please come to my office to take a makeup exam promptly upon your return. Except for extraordinary cases, makeups will be given only within a week of the exam date.

Absences need to be properly documented. Please bring with you a written explanation regarding your absence from the exam when you come to take the makeup exam.

When exams are handed back, please check that your grade has been properly totalled. If you feel an error was made in the grading, please write on the top of your exam page only the question number that needs to be regraded. Please do not write anything else on your paper.

Regrade requests will ordinarily be honored only if made promptly after papers are handed back. Unclaimed exams will also be considered as evidence of nonattendance.

Final exams

The registrar's office says that all conflicts involving the final exam should be resolved by a specified date.

Course grades

The course grade will be based on documented performance on examinations. All examinations count equally, including the final examination.

An incomplete will only be given when work prior to the final exam is satisfactory, but the student has a valid excuse for missing the final exam. If earlier work is unsatisfactory or missing, a failing grade will be given. Incompletes can not be removed without satisfactory written documentation. An incomplete not removed during the next term that the student is enrolled will automatically be converted by the registrar to a failing grade. Please refer to the registrar's student rules and regulations.
