Tom Morley's 1509
Hello.
Welcome to Mathematics 1509, Spring quarter 1998.
My office hours are MWF 7:30-7:55, 9:05-9:50,
Skiles 263 or
Skiles 237 (Math Lounge).
General Information
Class (at Tech) is at 8:05 am in
The Paul Weber Space Science and Technology Building
or at Norcross High School.
on MWF. For on campus students, on TTh, it is in
Skiles
and the TA is
Aaron Proietti (EMAIL:
proietti@math.gatech.edu).
Computer Project
Due Tuesday of the last week of classes.
- To be done in groups of three
- All group member's names must be on the front, in the computer
file -- handwritten names will not be acctepted.
- Copious explanatory text must be added.
- Extra question to be turned in -- design
a teacup ride of your own devising, computing various quantities to
show that it is a safe and interesting ride.
Here
is the Mathematica version -- It's a bunch of nicely constructed web
pages - not a Matheamtica file --
and it contains the questions. Follow the link to
Teacups.
Here some Maple Code that will
help you the adapt the Mathematica code in the above
web pages.

Week of April 27 - May 1 (Fifth Week)
Project ( In two pieces!!! Due May 1)
This AND
this . The project are to be done in groups of three ,
with one printout handed in per group. The printout should have printed
on it the names of the people in the group.
If you are at Norcross, or want to do a project in a good language
(Mathematica) instead of a poorly designed language (Maple), I have
an alternate project. See me.
NO Quiz Thursday!
Week of April 13 - April 17 (Fourth Week)
Suggested Problems:
- Radius of Convergence: Page 696, 1,3,5,7,9,19,21,23,31,33
- Binomial Series: Page 714, 21,22
- Conditional Convergenge, Alternating Series: Page 690, 1,3,5,7,46,47
- Section 10.9, Page 704: 1,2,3,4,5,6,21
- Section 10.10, page 714: 1,2,3,4,5,6,12,13,14,15,25,26
The week before that: (Third week of quarter)
Section 9.3 Improper Integrals, page 616: 1,3,5,7,37,39,41,42,43,*63
Section 10.3 Geometric Series, page 656: 1,3,5,7,11,13,19,20,24
Section 10.5 Infinite Series, page 668: 13,15,17,19,21,27.39,40
There will be a half hour quiz next Thursday, i.e., April 16. It covers:
- Section 9.3 Improper Integrals -- All
- Section 10.3 Geometric Series -- All
- Section 10.4 Infinite Series:
- Definition of Infinite Series
- Definition of Convergence and Divergence
- Theorem 2 on page 662, and its usage
- Section 10.5 Series with non-negative ....
- Using the integral test, i.e., comparing with areas.
I am interested in using the idea behind the integral
test (page 672) rather than a careful and explicit memorization
of the integral test
The week before the week above: (Second Week of Quarter)
Quiz this thursday on section 9.4, 9.5, and 9.1.
Suggested Problems for section 9.4, 9.5, 9.1:

Note: If you have access to Mathematica on your machine, you may want to
set Netscape preferences so that file extension "ma" points to Mathematica.
This can be found under "helper apps". Note however, that you need a lot
of RAM to do this.
If you do not have Mathematica, you can read the following files
with Math Reader , downloadable from
Wolfram Research
