Current contests

Note about contest entries. These must be entirely your own work and not, for example, copied from the Web, even in modified form (which would be an honor code violation.

Unless otherwise specified, entries should be submitted to the professor, either in hard copy or by e-mail in a universally readable format, such as pdf.

Past contests

  1. Due 4 September. One point for the most creative and interesting curve drawn with software, such as Mathematica's ParametricPlot command. Submit both a graphic file (pdf, jpg, pict, png) and the code used by e-mail.
  2. Due 4 September. One point for the most informative on-paragraph explanation expanding on material from the lectures connected with curves. This should be submitted to the T-Square archive with a copy to Prof. H.
  3. Due Thursday, 9 October. This contest has to do with the "funky example" shown in class. Find a formula for a saddle like that one. What do the gradient and Hessian matrix tell you about the funky saddle point at the origin x = y = 0? Carefully discuss the tangent planes and the (3D) normal vectors at points near the origin.
  4. Due 14 November. Write a report on one of the fancy coordinate systems from the lecture of 5 November, either elliptic or bipolar. In your report, include:
    1. The "dictionary" relating the curvilinear coordinates in terms of the Cartesian coordinates and vice versa.
    2. An integral using the fancy coordinates. (Evaluate it.)
    3. Mention of some practical or geometric applications
  5. Due 25 November. What are the best math videos on the net or on DVD that are related to vector calculus? Send in complete link or bring in the (legal) DVD. We screened two winners on Wednesday the 26th:
