Introduction to the Calculus of Variations
The Euler-Lagrange Equation for Rotating Drops
The Delaunay-Chandrasekhar Problem
W 29 Lecture (John McCuan)
Two Problems (Delaunay-Chandrasekhar) Emerge:
1. Analyze all solutions of the rotating drop equation.
2. Give a rolling curve interpretation.
Discussion included:
1. Outline of the analysis for (connected) rotationally
symmetric drops that contain the axis of rotation.
2. Equations (DE's) for path of a roulette along a line.
