Area of Research Probability, Analysis, Mathematical Physics
Degree Ph.D. 1984, Princeton University

Current research interests:

Professor Carlen does research in functional analysis and probability, primarily on problems of mathematical physics, especially non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, and on variational problems and related geometric inequalities. Copies of his latest papers, on which he is currently lecturing, can be found on his preprint page (last updated August 20, 2001).

Professor Carlen is also interested in innovative ways to use use the internet and java applets in particular in undergraduate teaching. Some applets he has written, and thoughts about the use of applets in teaching can be found on his applets page.
